The Couch to 5K is a programme created by the NHS to get us off our couches and out running. Over 9 weeks you gradually increase the running intensity with the aim of running 5km without stopping at week 9. With the support of resources available on the NHS website and by committing to 3 runs per week, it is an excellent way for new or returning runners to build their fitness and confidence.
The first week of the programme commences with a 5 minute brisk walk, followed by 20 minutes of alternating 1 minute of running with 1.5 minutes of walking. The amount you run then increases each week as you get fitter, ensuring you are always pushing yourself a little further, building strength and stamina.
Each week we will meet at The Yoga Rooms, run the next stage of the Couch to 5K programme as a group, then do a yoga class. Your other two runs can be done whenever you wish through the week, but we can set up a WhatsApp group should you wish to meet up with other group members. Taking on the challenge as a part of a group, building a little community and encouraging each other really helps with motivation and perseverance.
The yoga class will be tailored specifically to your needs, allowing you to build strength, breathe easier and stretch out achy muscles. Just like the running, it will be suitable for beginners, but you will see an improvement by the end of the course.
The final week will be a gentle yoga class and then we’ll meet the next morning, Saturday 7th March to do the Stretford Parkrun. This is a 5km timed running event in Longford Park, it’s free and open to all levels of runners and walkers. Should you wish to, we can then go for a well earned breakfast to celebrate.
About the Course Leader
Laura Bain has experienced first-hand the difference running can make to your physical and mental health. She is a certified run leader and has completed two marathons. Laura has been practicing yoga for ten years and has been teaching for four. She teaches vinyasa yoga, yin yoga, meditation, Broga and mum & baby yoga. Laura teaches an energising and light-hearted yoga, focusing on mindful movement. She creates a supportive and welcoming environment where she will encourage you to challenge yourself regardless of your prior experience.
What to bring:
Trainers with an appropriate level of support.
Some form of high visibility clothing.
A water bottle.
Comfortable clothing and warm layers (which you can leave at The Yoga Rooms whilst you are running).
In the event of adverse weather conditions a running session may not be appropriate. In this eventuality a yoga class will be held instead.
