Pilates can have huge benefits for everyone no matter what their fitness level or physical capabilities, it can be modified or progressed to suit each individual.
When I first started to practice Pilates I was not a fitness fanatic and
I had had two children but I was struck by the huge sense of well being,
strength and relaxed calm I felt. My previous back problems disappeared
and my body and mind felt great.
I decided to train to teach to pass on these feelings to others. I taught
through the pregnancy of my 3rd child and once again the benefits I felt
because of the strength and awareness Pilates had given me were invaluable
during the birth and that vulnerable post natal period.
The beauty of mat based Pilates is it can be taught anywhere to anybody.
Making it more accessible, you don't have to go to a Pilates Studio to
discover the benfits for yourself . The use of small equipment in mat
based classes also enhances the practice either supporting the body or
adding more challenge as appropriate.
I try to regularly attends workshops and training events with master teachers
( some who have been certified by Joseph Pilates himself or trained by
one of those who have) . I feel it's important to revisit being a student
so I can empathise with those coming to class but also to deepen my knowledge
and understanding of the Pilates Method. This means hopefully better teaching
! but also more interest and a feeling of progression for those who attend
the classes.
As Joseph Pilates said the Pilates method :
"develops the body uniformly, corrects wrong postures, restores
physical vitality, invigorates the mind, and elevates the spirit"
Need I say more!
